Stephen Sondheim’s Gothic masterpiece, Sweeney Todd, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The new production at the Playground stays true to Sondheim’s masterful score and the unforgettable characters.

It is done, however, in the style of the 2005 Broadway revival and the recent national tour. The Playground production follows the concept of famed director John Doyle who made it into a smaller, intimate chamber piece with ten actors who not only play the roles but play many of the musical instruments of the orchestra as well.

Doyle’s landmark production won a Tony Award for its innovative ways of telling the story of the demon barber of Fleet Street who is wrongly sent to a prison colony in Australia by a corrupt judge who then takes advantage of the barber’s wife and daughter. Joining Sweeeny on his bloody trail of revenge is Mrs. Lovett who finds a “creative” use for Sweeney’s victims in her meat pie shoppe.

The Playground production is directed by Sheryl Jensen.

The show is adult in theme and content and is not intended for children.

The Last Five Years
The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress.
The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy travels backwards in time (beginning the show at the end of the marriage),
and Jamie travels forwards (starting just after the couple have first met).
The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song, a duet, in the middle.

Thursday through Saturday, October 8 through 17, 2009 - 7:30pm
